Day 36      May 29, 2006                      Day Five—Ten Days of Constant Prayer

Read:    Psalm 42

Reflection:    Many years ago, I went to a chalk art camp in the Blue Mountains, and on the first day of my first year there, we watched the instructor draw a beautiful picture - so effortlessly and effectively.   Then we were to draw it!
Wow!   Effortless?   Effective?   I ended up in my room upstairs in the old hotel in tears, just as I always did in art classes at school.
I felt heartbroken and like I could never be able to draw acceptably.  In desperation I turned to the Psalms and zeroed in on Psalm 42.
Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him
For the help of His presence.”   (v. 5) and again in verse 11.

I did receive some hope, and returned to the camp for thirteen or more summers.
The first experience has come back to me on various occasions, and I remember to move
past despair, to pray to God, and He gives hope and help with His presence.

Adoration:   For His lovingkindness in the daytime, and His song with me in the night.  (v.8.)

Confession:   Despair is not of God, so I pray to the God of my life.   (v. 8)

Thanksgiving:   For hope and help, and compassion.

Supplication:    For help to realize discouragement is not of God.

Help me, LORD, to realize if I am doing things for Your glory, that you will help me
live for You.   So may I do my best since it is for You, and leave the results to You.   In
Jesus’ name.

Prayer Focus for Constant Prayer:  The Peace of Christ – For relationships to be transformed
“All the believers were together and had everything in common.  Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need… They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people…”  (Acts 2:44-47).

For His Church-- For reconciliation among churches, removing divisions and hostilities: for God’s people to turn away from greed and worldly desires and to become more generous than ever before; for relationships among Christians to be marked by love, joy and gladness of heart; and for churches to enjoy renewed favor in every community.

For Our World—for God to bring outbreaks of Christ’s peace all over the world through the changed lives of His people; for God to heal broken relationships in homes and neighborhoods; for God to intervene in wars, restraining spiritual forces of evil, subduing terrorism, and protecting the lives of those afflicted; for God to use Christians to help lift people out of the oppression of extreme poverty (estimates are that over a billion people struggle to survive on less than one dollar a day).
