Day 22 May 15, 2006 Beginning of the Daniel Fast (see resource at end of book)
Read: Psalm 68
Reflection: David, the greatest king of Israel’s united kingdom, conquered Jerusalem and established it as the nation’s capitol. As he prepared to make it the center of Israel’s worship, he began gathering the parts of the tabernacle (tent of worship) which had been scattered by war. This Psalm was written for the day when the ark of the covenant, the golden box representing the very presence of God, was brought triumphantly with great celebration into the city. Follow the procession through the Psalm: It begins with the words God commanded Moses to speak whenever the ark set out to lead the people to a new place─ “May God arise, may his enemies be scattered” (verses 1-3). Then the marchers sing praise (v.4-6). They recount past marches (v.7-14). The ark arrives in Jerusalem (15-17). There God is enthroned (18-23). The ark enters the holiest place (24-27). They call for God to rule with power (28-31). God’s presence gives power to his people (32-35)!
David knew that he and his people would succeed only if they put the Lord at the center of their lives, and let themselves be ruled completely by the true King of kings. Every dark and self-willed corner of our lives must make way for Him. Every church plan and policy must yield to His rule. No doubtful habit can remain, for He is holy. Once the almighty Presence of the Lord Jesus Christ sits firmly enthroned in us, then as He moves us through the events of the week, to the various people we see day by day, His Presence goes with us. And as we pray, He works powerfully to draw people to Himself and overcome Satan’s work in their lives. No wonder this is a Psalm of celebration! May God arise; may His enemies be scattered!
Adoration: Praise the God who is awesome in His sanctuary ─ the sanctuary of our hearts, the holy place of His gathered congregations of two or three or more. He lives among us and in us in power, calling us to carry His presence everywhere.
Confession: Lord, it is so easy to put myself back on the throne of my life, and forget to seek Your kingdom, Your will, and the honor due Your name. I am more worried about what people think of me than I am about what they think of You. I have not always been willing to join with fellow believers in seeking and welcoming Your presence. But now let me decrease so You may increase, Lord Jesus.
Thanksgiving: We thank you, Lord, that You show Yourself mighty in our lives and families and congregations and county when we give You Your rightful place as Head of your church and Purifier from all sin.
Supplication: Ask God to let His presence be obvious in your life today.
Prayer: Lord, be enthroned as Holy Ruler of my life, my family, my church, my neighborhood today. Let me carry the fragrance of Your presence with me everywhere.
