Day 12      May 5, 2006

Read:  Psalm 101

Reflection:  In the late 1800’s a well-known weekly newspaper ran a regular feature called “Celebrities at Home.”  The hunger of readers for insight into the lives of the rich, the famous, and the beautiful sold papers then and continues today.  Interviewers in various media still present their exclusive information to us, peering curiously into the way these people “lead us” in the world of fashion, decorating, beauty, social issues, and (of all things) love of pets.  We see them cooking in their kitchens, setting their tables for intimate dinners with friends…we may even peek into the closet!
Psalm 101 could also be titled “A Celebrity at Home,” as it gives us a deeper picture of how David lived within his house, describing the people and things with which he surrounded himself.  We won’t see fancy cats or dogs in his picture, or designer furniture topped with colorful bouquets, or cutting edge theater systems.  We see, rather, the man after God’s own heart, who desired to live in a godly way every moment of the day.  How did he do that?

  1. By walking in his own home with a blameless heart, even when there was no one watching who might be impressed.
  2. By having nothing in his home—books or other entertainment—which would even hint at being offensive, immoral, or shameful.
  3. By not listening to gossip or slander, but rather diligently silencing such talk.
  4. By surrounding himself with friends and workers who were not godless, angry, rebellious, or haughty people; but with those who were faithful, righteous, and genuine.
  5. By knowing what was happening in the lives of all those living in his home and allowing no deceit or deviousness.

We know from history and David’s own confession that as long as he followed this pattern of personal godliness in his home, he did well.  The times he let any of these slip became seasons of downfall and grief for him.
The Psalm closes with David’s guidelines for his action as king of his nation.  He had the right and responsibility in that capacity to silence evil and deal with wicked individuals.  It was part of his job as king to serve and care for his subjects, making sure they were able to live in a peaceful and godly environment.
Now what about you and me?  It’s time for some self-examination and covenanting here…how do I live within my own home, where no one outside the family sees me?  What do I have lying around?  How do I treat my family when I’m tired and grumpy?  What words do I speak or listen to regarding people I know?  Do I train my children to be truthful and obedient?  Do I do my job in a responsible and godly way?  So many questions, but so very important!!

Adoration:  Praise the Lord today for His holiness, for setting guidelines for us that He himself is willing to follow.  What a wonderful father He is!

Confession:  As we look at ourselves honestly, we need to confess the sins we discover there.

Thanksgiving:  God is so gracious, always ready to forgive and restore.  Thank Him for that.

Supplication:  Pray for one another, that we will truly grow in godliness every moment of the day.

Lord, today please teach me through Your Word to examine the way I live and to covenant with You and with my own self to walk more consistently in a way that would please You.  Would You, through Your Holy Spirit, bring to my attention things I need to change as well as things that are pleasing to You?  Thank You!  Amen.
