Day 1 April 24, 2006
Read: Psalm 69
Reflection: How does a person write a few words on a Psalm of this prophetic magnitude? In Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John we have the facts of the crucifixion. In this Psalm we have the feelings of the crucified. Facts you can put in a box, but feelings ooze out of all the pores and cannot be contained. Facts you can look at, but feelings can crush the soul.
Back in 1912 my mother and her family were set to sail to America on the Titanic, but while standing in line, found out that their house had just burnt to the ground. They left the line to inspect the damage. That circumstance saved their lives. The ship struck an iceberg which tore a 300 foot gash in her side so the waters outside came in. The unsinkable ship was sunk.
At Calvary, Jesus struck the iceberg – and the waters came into His soul. A mighty gash had been made and SIN surged in – not His sin but ours! He experienced something He had never experienced before, sin in His soul. He cried, “Save me, O God; for the waters are come into my soul.”
Is not this the cry of our lips as well when the full consciousness of our sin overwhelms us and we cry out for salvation? Easter may well be the time for us to remember the pain my sin caused Him and to remember as well, as I now live, that sin in my life now still causes Him pain.
Ah, Easter, the glory and majesty of that resurrection morning coupled with the remembrance of my sin which put Him on the cross. At the start of this series leading to Pentecost, may we be driven to our knees with the awful wonder of it all.
In this chapter, we have seen it all from the agony of the cross to His coming again at the end of time in all His glory. Go back and read it again.
Adoration: Consider His glory and majesty, and praise Jesus that he was so amazingly willing to experience what He did out of His love for us.
Confession: Since our sin made it necessary for Jesus to go through the agony of His death, it becomes imperative for us to go through the process of soul-searching to identify, confess, and repent from those sins today.
Thanksgiving: Thank the Lord for His cleansing, for His new life through the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Supplication: Pray that the Holy Spirit would help us be willing to open ourselves to those feelings of being overwhelmed by sin, willing to be driven to our knees with the awful wonder of it all.
Father, to find ourselves as a participant in salvation history is an amazing thing to us. It is an honor like no other! We come to You with confession on our lips, humble of heart, desirous of Your grace, love and forgiveness. Help us to so live that we cause no pain in Your heart. In the name of Jesus, Amen
